This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. Applicants who do not receive a minimum of two points on the screen-out element(s) will be found ineligible. The Screen-out Element for this position is: The ability to do the work of a High Voltage Electrical Worker without more than normal supervision performing duties such as: 1) Install, maintain, and repair ship-to-shore electrical power cables and end connectors; 2) Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, one-line diagrams, AutoCAD drawings, wiring diagrams, sketches, etc.; 3) Energize and de-energize electrical circuits up to 13,800 volts; 4) Operate boom truck (crane) and other motorized equipment to move electrical cables to support connects, disconnects, and ship set-ups. I work under close supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed.

PHYSICAL EFFORT: The incumbent frequently lifts, carries, and sets up tools, materials, and equipment weighing up to 40 pounds. The position requires bending, stooping, climbing, twisting, and standing for long periods; working aloft ships, at ground level, and in trenches or manholes. The incumbent is often required to work in awkward and uncomfortable positions. Climbing may be required. Good eye, hand, leg, and body coordination is necessary when installing, repairing, and testing electrical equipment. Incumbent may be required to work in confined space and in aerial platforms. Requires hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity to adjust, control and maintain equipment. Requires color discrimination to distinguish color coded electric circuits. Requires both arms and legs when climbing ladders and into/out of the boom truck. Work pace is rapid for 8 hours and many times longer. Heavy exertion is required constantly.

WORKING CONDITIONS: The employee works predominately outdoors and is exposed to a variety of extreme weather conditions. The incumbent is exposed to elevations, high voltage conductors, and open unprotected switch gear with voltages ranging up to 34,500 volts. These hazards may result in cuts, shock, broken bones, or loss of life. Normally works in crowded, industrialized, congested waterfront pier. Exposed to noise hazards, high voltages, and heights and may be required to work around hazardous materials such as PCB's. Such uncomfortable conditions exist as excessive heat and cold weather conditions as well as dust, dirt, noise, poor illumination, unpleasant odors, and dampness.
