The primary purpose of this position is to serve as a Youth Program Specialist at Wright Patterson Air Force Base who provides assistance to the Youth Activities Director in organizing, implementing, and conducting various sports, fitness, recreational and social programs for eligible youth.

Requirements:

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, Administrative and Management Positions.


BASIC REQUIREMENT OR INDIVIDUAL OCCUPATIONAL REQUIREMENT:

Education

Undergraduate and Graduate Education: Major study -- general recreation, or one of the appropriate fields of recreation such as outdoor recreation; recreation and parks leadership; wild land recreation management; natural resources recreation; youth recreation; public, urban, or community recreation; special populations recreation (e.g., senior citizens, institutional, etc.); or physical education.

Experience

General Experience (for GS-5 positions): Experience that provided a knowledge of the goals, principles, methods, and techniques of recreation, and an understanding of the interests of individuals or groups.

Specialized Experience (for positions above GS-5): Experience that demonstrated the ability to apply the principles of one or more specialty areas of recreation. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include:

  • Planning, organizing, coordinating, supervising, or evaluating community, industrial, outdoor, institutional, or other recreational programs.
  • Planning, establishing, or evaluating a recreational curriculum for junior college or higher academic levels.
  • Instructing in the principles and techniques of recreational program planning and management.
  • Serving in a leadership role in the programs and activities of local, regional, and/or national recreational organizations.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE : Applicants must have at least 3 years of general experience, 1 year of which is equivalent to federal experience at the next lower grade (GS-04), level, pay band (NH-02), or equivalent (pay schedule, pay band, etc). General experience is described as: assisting with the execution of fitness programs or events by using the principles, methods, and techniques of recreation, and an understanding of the interests of individuals or groups; aided in performing individual health risk appraisals, comprehensive fitness assessments, and proper exercise techniques for cardiovascular and resistance equipment and performing training for others.

NOTE: Due to the use of 120-day rosters, this period of experience may be completed within 120 days of the closing date of this announcement.

EDUCATION:

GS-05/NH-02: 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:
1. Knowledge and skill gained through relevant experience which enables the employee to competently and independently carry out continuing recreation sports programs through proper application of the principles, concepts, and techniques of recreation to the specific needs at hand.
2. Knowledge of the rules, regulations, and requirements for a variety of youth individual and team sports programs. Ability to do considerable walking, carrying, moving and handling of moderate to heavy recreation equipment and supplies.
3. Ability to motivate children, adolescents, and volunteers to participate in planned activities.
4. Skill in coordinating and scheduling the sports activities and facilities.
5. Ability to maintain and assist in repairing sports equipment and facilities.
6. Knowledge and skill of effective management of resources of the youth sports program.
7. Ability to develop calendars, flyers, and news articles to publicize youth sports programs.

PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE : Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE : Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
